Death and (of?) the Law

Summary: The law's regulation (or not) of matters of human killing and death are defining of its role and revealing of its perspective. In matters of death, substantial changes in the law's regulations have emerged in the last number of decades. We will consider the law's engagement with euthanasia, abortion, capital punishment, embryo disposal, and the novel neurological criterion of death.
Biography: Jeff Shafer is an attorney and has served as the director of the Hale Institute at New Saint Andrews College, Moscow, Idaho, since 2022. The Institute’s aims are informed by the Christian faith in the Reformed tradition and directed to the end of empowering persons to honor God and love their neighbors through promoting the conditions and institutions of political liberty and civic virtue.
For 16 years Mr. Shafer served as Senior Counsel with Alliance Defending Freedom in its Washington D.C. and Scottsdale, Arizona offices. He has litigated public interest cases in federal and state trial and appellate courts throughout the United States, as well as developing academic and advocacy initiatives on matters of policy concern.
Early in his career he operated a general-practice firm in Cincinnati, emphasizing criminal defense litigation. Thereafter, he practiced in a law partnership focusing on elections law and civil constitutional cases.
